What is pardon?

A pardon or a record suspension is a procedure that helps an individual to get his/her criminal record cleaned. The federal government of Canada issues pardon/Record Suspension. Once they decide to give you a clearing, then in any search of the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) will not show that you had a criminal record. The PBC will clean and completely sealed your record.

The Parole Board of Canada (PBC) is a tribunal who can grant or deny or revoke pardon/record suspension.

If you are interested, you can easily apply with the National Pardon Centre either online or through a counsellor.

Pardon Eligibility:

You need to find out if you are eligible or not. You are only suitable once you have completed your sentences, and the waiting period is over.

A sentence can be anything from a fine or probation to jail time.

The waiting period depends if the conviction is a summary offence or an indictable offence.

  • Summary offences: 5 years
  • Indictable offences: 10 years
  •

Court appearances do not result in a conviction. There are waiting periods that must meet before your record wholly destroyed.

  • Absolute Discharge: 1 year
  • Conditional Discharge: 3 years
  •

You should apply one year before you become eligible to apply.

Keep in mind the pardon application does take approximately one year depending on the convictions.

The application processing time at the National Pardon Centre for a pardon is 6-12 months. The time frame is not guaranteed.

How much will it cost to get my pardon?
